These ringtones were one instrument playing, you could change what instrument played. For example you could have a piano, drums or a guitar. Monophonic ringtones are very low quality.

Next came a revolution in ringtones. Polyphonic ringtones allowed a much broader range of instruments. Midi was the preferred format. Now you could have cheesy sounding music that had drums, pianos, guitars and base guitars. Ringtones still didn’t have voices in them yet. This was about to change.
